US Vice President JD Vance is expected to visit India soon, according to a Reuters report published on Friday. The report, citing an unnamed Indian trade official, suggests that the visit could take place as New Delhi looks to finalise a bilateral trade agreement with former US President Donald Trump.
This development comes shortly after Trump announced a 90-day pause on tariffs for India and other trading partners—a significant shift in policy. However, while easing restrictions for some, Trump simultaneously escalated trade tensions with China by raising tariffs on Chinese imports to 145 percent. Beijing responded with a sharp countermeasure, imposing a 125 percent levy on American goods, marking a new phase in the ongoing trade war that reignited following the US’s earlier move on April 2.
Amid this volatile global trade environment, India and the US have reportedly finalised the framework for a fresh round of bilateral trade talks. According to the Indian trade official, these discussions could pave the way for a mutually beneficial agreement within the 90-day window of tariff relief granted by Trump on April 9.
“We are far ahead in trade talks with the US compared to other countries… there are lots of possibilities in 90 days,” the official told Reuters, requesting anonymity. The temporary pause in tariffs has also brought relief to Indian exporters, offering them a brief but critical window of opportunity.
