In a rare cross-border wedding, the son of a BJP leader in Uttar Pradesh married a Pakistani woman via an online “nikah” due to political tensions and health concerns.

BJP corporator Tahseen Shahid arranged the marriage of his elder son, Mohammad Abbas Haider, to Lahore-based Andleep Zahra. Despite applying for a visa, Haider was unable to travel to Pakistan because of ongoing tensions between the two nations.

The situation worsened when the bride’s mother, Rana Yasmin Zaidi, was admitted to an ICU in Pakistan. Faced with these challenges, Shahid decided to hold the ceremony online.

On Friday night, the groom’s family gathered at an imambara while the bride’s family participated remotely from Lahore.

Shia religious leader Maulana Mahfoozul Hasan Khan stated that, in Islam, a woman’s consent is crucial for “nikah,” and this was obtained virtually, with maulanas from both sides officiating.

Haider expressed hope that his wife would receive her Indian visa soon. BJP MLC Brijesh Singh Prishu and other guests attended the ceremony to offer their congratulations.
