The Ramcharitmanas, Sahrdayaloka-Locana, and Panchatantra have been honored with inclusion in UNESCO‘s Memory of the World Asia-Pacific Regional Register, marking a significant moment of pride for India. UNESCO has recognised a total of 20 items from the Asia Pacific region in its Memory of the World Regional Register for the 2024 cycle.

The officials on Monday informed that the decision on the same was taken on May 7-8 in the 10th General Meeting of the Memory of the World Committee for Asia and the Pacific (MOWCAP) in Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia.

India’s literary heritage shines

The addition of these three Indian literary legacies in the register will attract more readers, and researchers across the world to dive into the artistic world of expression. 

“The ‘Ramcharitmanas’, ‘Panchatantra’, and ‘Sahrdayaloka-Locana’ are such timeless works that have deeply influenced Indian literature and culture, shaping the nation’s moral fabric and artistic expressions,” a PIB press release stated.

“These literary works have transcended time and place, leaving an indelible mark on readers and artists both within and outside India,” it said.

UNESCO honors artistic skills

As per the statement released, the idea is to safeguard diverse narratives across the world and honour the artistic skills that shaped society, and continue to inspire the future generation. The accolades have also been given for recognising the talent behind the creation of the masterpiece and their moral teachings for humanity at large.

Ministry of Culture hails decision 

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Culture, India also highlighted that the addition of India’s rich literary heritage to the global platform is one of the major accomplishments for India. The ministry said that the initiative highlights the effort taken to preserve the global cultural legacy.
