Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said that those in power after the Independence of the country couldn’t understand the significance of the places of worship, and were ashamed of their own culture and history.
Speaking in Guwahati after unveiling infrastructure projects worth Rs 11,600 crore, the PM said, “After independence those who were in power for years, even they could not understand the importance of the sacred places of worship. For political benefits, they started a trend of being ashamed of their own culture and history.”
The PM asserted that the nation’s pilgrimages, temples, places of faith, are not just places to visit, but are indelible signs of our civilization’s journey of thousands of years, adding that this is a testimony to how India stood firm in the face of every crisis.
“No country can progress by neglecting its history. But, in the last ten years the situation in the country has changed,” the PM asserted.
He also said that the peace has returned to Assam in the last 10 years and over 7,000 people have put down their arms and returned to the mainstream.
“Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) has also been removed from many districts,” PM Modi said.
The PM also said that the inauguration of the projects worth Rs 11,000 crore will strengthen the connectivity of Assam, and the connectivity of northeast with other South Asian countries.
He also said that the projects will increase employment opportunities in the state. He said that before the BJP government in Assam, there were only six medical colleges, but today there are 12 medical colleges.
“Assam is becoming a major centre for cancer treatment in northeast. The government has constructed over four crore pucca houses for the poor, and worked towards getting water, and electricity to all houses,” the PM said.
