In the All-Party Meeting, Makkal Needhi Maiam President, Kamal Haasan curtly criticised the central government for their parliamentary constituency delimitation. He warned that it could undermine India’s federal structure and diversity. Reiterating his clear stance on this matter from previous comments he said that this vision of inclusion promotes a homogenised “hindia”.
Speaking on the issue, he further said that, “The issue of parliamentary constituency delimitation based on population is just not a concern for Tamil Nadu” to elaborate that it also affects Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Punjab, Odisha, West Bengal, Himachal Pradesh and the North-Eastern states. Further he emphasised that, “states that cooperated for national development by controlling population growth should not be punished” reminding his audience of the core principles of democracy and federalism.
The parliamentary constituency delimitation is expected to take place in 2026. The All-Party Meeting presided by Tamil Nadu CM Stalin passed a resolution requestion PM Modi to give assurance in the parliament if delimitation is done, it should be done on the 1971 population census from 2026 to the next 30 years.
The resolution read, “It is entirely unjustifiable to reduce parliamentary representation of Tamil Nadu and other south Indian states solely because they have proactively implemented population control measures in the national interest.”
Parties including the governing Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, All India Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, Congress, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam and the Communist parties attended the meeting. The Bharatiya Janata Party, Naam Tamilar Katchi and Tamil Maanila Congress boycotted it.
According to the speakers at the meeting, this decision can potentially harm the federal structure of democratic India posing a “grave danger” to Tamil Nadu. Kamal Haasan’s sharp critique of the central government’s delimitation plans underscores growing concerns over India’s federal structure and representation. The All-Party Meeting’s resolution urges fairness, warning against penalizing states for successful population control. As the 2026 delimitation nears, the debate highlights deeper regional tensions in India’s evolving democratic landscape.
