Hundreds of people today took to the street near the Dadar TT Circle in central Mumbai to protest against demolition of an old building where Dr B R Ambedkar launched his political movement during the pre-Independence period.

The mob vandalised 15 shops and damaged window panes of some buses, police said.

The protest led to traffic snarls in the area. By evening the situation was normal, police said.

The structure was demolished by the People’s Improvement Trust, which claimed it was dilapidated and a grand ‘Ambedkar Bhavan’ building would come up in its place.

However, Prakash Ambedkar, former MP and Ambedkar’s grandson, has accused the trust of trying to exploit the land commercially.
