A minor girl was allegedly raped and killed by a labourer at a rice mill in Telangana’s Peddapalli district, police said on Friday. The accused in the case, identified as Balaram, aged 25, has been arrested under the POCSO Act, PTI reported.

According to Police Commissioner M Sreenivasulu, Balaram hailed from Madhya Pradesh and was working as a labourer in a rice mill at Sultanabad in Peddapalli district.

The incident took place while the minor girl, aged merely six, was sleeping with her mother at a camp within the rice mill. The accused took the girl in the early hours, raped her, and when the girl raised an alarm, he throttled her neck and killed her.

The residents of the area who gathered there caught him, leading to his arrest, an official said. A case of rape and murder was registered, with the relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act also invoked.

Subsequently, the victim’s body was sent to a government hospital for a postmortem examination.
