The Coimbatore district superintendent of police, K Karthikeyan, and District Social Welfare Officer R Ambika investigated the Isha Foundation on Tuesday. The action was taken followed by complaints that women are being ”brainwashed” for residing at the foundation. The development comes after the Madras High Court ordered a status report regarding cases in connection with the foundation situated at the Velliangiri foothills on Monday.

150 personnel were present during the enquiry

About 150 police personnel were stationed at the Isha Foundation for precaution during the enquiry. According to a senior police officer, ”the officials investigated with the individuals at the foundation.”  The investigation has been carried out because of a habeas corpus petition filed by S Kamarajm, who is a retired professor from Coimbatore. The professor has alleged that his two daughters have been kept at the foundation and they are not able to contact the family.

Foundation refuses to accept the allegations

The Isha Foundation has denied the accusations that it promotes monkhood or stops individuals from getting married. The foundation stated, ‘Isha Foundation was started by Sadhguru for teaching yoga and spirituality. We believe that adults have the right to choose their path”. The foundation also added that the monks residing there are doing so on their own will and have even given their statements before the court to prove it.

The foundation also mentioned that the petitioner also tried to trespass the premises under the pretence of a fact-finding mission which resulted in a criminal case filed against them. They also made it clear that no criminal charges are pending on the foundation other than the current one and have expressed confidence that the court will settle the matter fairly.
