In a relief for the Isha Foundation, the Tamil Nadu police on Thursday cleared the foundation led by Jaggi Vasudev, popularly known as Sadguru, in the missing persons case, noting that most of those reported missing had returned.

During the hearing at the Madras High Court, the police stated that individuals who had gone missing from the Isha Foundation’s yoga center in Vellingiri, Coimbatore district, had returned, having left the center due to personal reasons.

This submission came during a hearing on a habeas corpus petition filed by C Thirumalai, whose brother has been missing for a year. However, the court expressed dissatisfaction with Thirumalai’s absence during the proceedings, cautioning that the case against the foundation could be dismissed if the petitioner fails to appear for the next hearing.

The bench rescheduled the matter for further consideration on June 7, terming it as the final opportunity for Thirumalai to appear.

In the meantime, the Tamil Nadu Police informed the court of their ongoing investigation into the case, requesting additional time to submit a status report. Additional Public Prosecutor E Raj Thilakavadi disclosed that 36 individuals, including employees and volunteers at the Isha Yoga Centre, had been questioned so far.

Last month, the police informed the bench that six people had gone missing from the Isha Foundation since 2016, as conveyed during the hearing on Thirumalai’s habeas corpus petition.

Thirumalai had approached the court after his brother, Ganesan, 46, disappeared from the Isha Foundation in March of the previous year. Despite Thirumalai’s efforts to establish contact, the foundation had only informed him that his brother, who worked at the ashram, had been absent for two days. Subsequently, Thirumalai filed a police complaint and moved the High Court.

However, during previous hearings, the police had informed the court that many individuals who leave the Foundation often do so voluntarily.
