Two days after the Maharashtra assembly election results were declared, there has been no announcement about the big question of who would be the next Chief Minister of the state. But, with the Maharashtra Assembly term set to end today, the name is likely to be announced soon.
Despite the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance securing a massive victory, winning 230 seats in the 288-member assembly, consensus has eluded the ruling combine’s leaders so far on who should be the next CM.
Shinde’s supporters have been saying that he should continue as CM as the landslide win was achieved under his leadership. On the other hand, leaders of the BJP, which recorded its highest-ever tally in the state assembly elections, have been pitching for Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis to take oath at the CM for a third time, PTI reported.
While sources in the state BJP claimed the party leadership in Delhi had cleared the name of Fadnavis as CM, a source in the Shiv Sena told The Indian Express, “There has been no consultation with us on making Fadnavis the CM and our party has not agreed on any name for CM yet.”
Another functionary of the Shiv Sena asserted that Eknath Shinde is “still in play, and there is no final decision” on the CM face. Indicating that the his faction of the Shiv Sena is in no mood to give up the post easily, the functionary told IE: “Talks are on… There will be multiple rounds of discussions before the name comes out. It might take some time.”
According to reports, it is learnt that the BJP leadership has convened a meeting in New Delhi with Shinde, Fadnavis and Pawar to discuss power-sharing details and the Cabinet composition. An announcement is expected only after the discussion.
Devendra Fadnavis, seen as the front-runner in the race for the top job in Maharashtra, came to Delhi on Monday evening, sparking anticipation about the meeting with the central leadership to resolve the Chief Ministership issue. But he doused expectation saying no meeting on the matter has been planned and he is in the national capital to attend the wedding of the daughter of Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla.
The Mahayuti alliance won 232 of the 288 assembly seats, with the BJP emerging as the single-largest party with 132 seats, reinforcing its dominant position in the state. Meanwhile, the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), consisting of the Congress, NCP (Sharad Pawar faction), and Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena, managed to bag only 49 seats.
