The now viral video of Red Fort bomber Dr Umar Nabi, where he talks about suicide bombing as a “martyrdom operation”, was found on his own mobile phone, investigators probing the Jaish-e-Mohammad terror module told The Indian Express.

Umar had given his phone to his younger brother. The younger brother was picked up by Jammu and Kashmir Police from their home in Pulwama on the night of the Red Fort blast. His older brother has also been detained. “He (the younger brother) had dumped the phone on Umar’s instructions. During questioning, he confessed that his brother handed him the device,” IE reported quoting a highly placed source.

What does Umar say in the video?

In the video, Dr Umar Nabi talks about what he calls the “very misunderstood” idea of suicide bombings, claiming that it is “martyrdom in Islam”.

He says in the one-minute-long video, “One of the very misunderstood concepts is the concept of what has been labelled as suicide bombing. It is a martyrdom operation and it is known in Islam.”

Phone found after intensive search, four videos extracted

Police said the younger brother took them to a drain where he had thrown the phone. “It was after strenuous efforts, but we managed to recover the phone,” a source told the outlet.

Once the phone was recovered, it was sent for data extraction. “At least four videos were extracted, including the one that is in public. The videos have been shared with the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and the State Investigation Agency (SIA),” it added.

Umar described as most radicalised member

Investigators also said Umar’s associates told them he was the most radicalised member of the group and frequently talked about suicide bombing.

Besides Umar, the other members of the module include his colleague from Al Falah University, Dr Muzammil Ahmad Ganai; Dr Adeel Majeed Rather, who worked at a private hospital in Saharanpur; and Dr Shaheen Shahid Ansari from Lucknow, who also worked at Al Falah.

The three arrested doctors have told investigators that they had not selected a target or date for an attack. They also suggested that after the module was busted, Umar panicked, ran off, and acted hastily, the report mentioned.
