Delhi CM Rekha Gupta labelled the attack on her earlier today (August 20) as a “cowardly attempt”. While highlighting her better health in a post on X, she said, “I request all my well-wishers not to trouble themselves by coming to meet me. I will soon be seen working among you again.”

She further wrote, “Such attacks can never break my spirit or my resolve to serve the people. Now, I will be among you with even more energy and dedication than before. Public hearings and the resolution of people’s problems will continue with the same seriousness and commitment as before. Your trust and support are my greatest strength.”

Speaking on the attack of Delhi CM, BJP MLA Sikha Rai said, “Rekha Gupta is currently on medication after the deadly attack on her… She will return with double enthusiasm and energy once she recovers.”

The Delhi CM slapgate

Delhi CM was attacked by a man identified as Rajesh Bhai Khimji Bhai Sakariya, a 41-year-old from Rajkot. Rajesh attacked CM Gupta during a public hearing session in the morning at her camp office on Wednesday. The incident took place while Gupta was interacting with citizens as part of her weekly Jan Sunwai. Rajesh initially handed some papers to the Chief Minister before getting into the scuffle. During the interaction, Rajesh started shouting, further slapped and abused the CM.

Attack draws criticism and questions on security

Delhi BJP chief Virendra Sachdeva has condemned the attack and called it “shameful”. He also urged authorities to ensure the CM’s safety during public interactions. Delhi Congress president Devender Yadav also strongly condemned the attack, and mentioned it as an unfortunate incident. In a statement to news agency ANI, he questioned the law-and-order situation in the national capital, saying that if the chief minister herself is not safe, then the safety of ordinary citizens is even more doubtful.
