The controversy over the State funeral arrangements for former prime minister Manmohan Singh escalated on Sunday, with the BJP accusing the Congress of politicising the solemn occasion and making baseless allegations against the Centre.

The Congress had earlier criticised the arrangements, describing them as a “shocking display of disrespect and mismanagement.” Pawan Khera, the party’s media and publicity department chief, levelled accusations against the government, claiming inadequate seating for Singh’s family, disruptions caused by Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s motorcade, and restricted media coverage.

“No news agencies except DD (Doordarshan) was allowed; DD focused on Modi and Shah, barely covering Dr Manmohan Singh’s family. Only three chairs were kept in the front row for Dr Singh’s family. Congress leaders had to insist on seats for his daughters and other family members,” he had said in a post on X.

“The prime minister and ministers did not stand up when the national flag was handed to the widow of the late prime minister or during the gun salute. The family was given inadequate space around the pyre due to soldiers occupying one side. The public was kept out, left watching from outside the venue,” he had added.

BJP hits back

In a detailed rebuttal, BJP IT department head Amit Malviya dismissed the claims, accusing the Congress of exploiting Singh’s death for political gain. He clarified that seating arrangements were managed as per protocol, with adequate space allocated for the family and dignitaries.

Malviya further stated that security restrictions and Doordarshan’s exclusive coverage were in line with standard procedures for State funerals. He emphasised that the ceremony was conducted with full military honours, with no deviations in protocol.

Addressing claims about disruptions caused by Shah’s motorcade, Malviya attributed traffic management to the police and maintained that family cars were issued proper passes in advance. He also defended the seating arrangements for foreign dignitaries, stating that protocol was followed.

“No restriction was imposed on well-wishers, supporters and visitors to come in and pay respect. Opportunities included the residence, the party office, the funeral procession and the venue of the funeral. The MoD is tasked with conduct of the funeral with full military honours. The same was carried out,” Malviya said, PTI reported.

“We hope the Congress will stop exploiting Dr Manmohan Singh in death and accord him the dignity he deserves,” he added.
