Six people were killed and 40 injured in a major fire that broke out at a seven-storey building in Mumbai’s Goregaon West early on Friday.

The blaze was reported at around 3.05 am at the Jay Bhavani building near Azad Maidan in Goregaon West. The six people who have been killed included a man, three women and two minor girls, PTI reported.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) officials said the fire was confined to the shops on the ground floor, scrap materials and several vehicles parked in the vicinity.

It was extinguished after over three hours of efforts at around 6.45 am.

15 of the injured people have been taken to the Cooper Hospital — the condition of two are critical — while 25 have been taken to Hinduhridaysamrat Balasaheb Thackeray Medical College (HBT) hospital.

In a bid to douse the flames, the Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB) used eight fire engines, five jumbo tankers, a water tank, a turntable ladder (TTL) and a quick reaction vehicle to assist in the relief process.

Maharashtra Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis took to X and wrote, “Pained to know about loss of lives in the fire incident at Goregaon, Mumbai. We are in touch with BMC & Mumbai Police officials & all the assistance is being provided. My deepest condolences to the families who lost their loved ones and wishing speedy recovery to the injured ones.”
