Security was beefed up in parts of Delhi following the notification of rules for the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019, by the Ministry of Home Affairs on Monday. The implementation of law, passed in 2019, was delayed on account of widespread protests against its passage.

To ensure there are no untoward incidents, police personnel and paramilitary forces were deployed in some parts of the national capital, with flag march being conducted in parts of northeast and southeast Delhi.

“We have made arrangements in the North East district. Our experience in 2020 was unpleasant which resulted in heavy loss. The rules will be notified today and we were alerted by the Police Headquarters. We had a meeting of the Aman Committee where we briefed people of both communities. We have tagged the potential troublemakers and some known criminals. We are in touch with our beat constables and keeping an eye on social media too,” DCP North East Delhi Joy N Tirkey.

The security measures have been taken in view of the communal riots witnessed in Delhi in January 2020 following protests against the CAA and National Register of Citizens.

“Safety of every single common man of Delhi’s northeast district is our responsibility,” DCP northeast Joy Tirkey told PTI. He said that police personnel along with paramilitary forces have intensified night vigil. “No one will be allowed to breach the law and order situation. We took out flag marches for the safety of every single common man,” the DCP said.

The notification of CAA rules paves the way for grant of citizenship to Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists, Parsis and Christian migrants from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan who came to India before December 31, 2014.
