The Supreme Court on Wednesday came down heavily on Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa for using defamation to throttle democracy. The apex court has re-issued notice to the chief minister on a petition alleging misuse of defamation law. Slamming Jayalalithaa, the Supreme Court said, “As a public figure you must face criticism. No other state misuses the state machinery like Tamil Nadu government. Defamation cases can’t be slapped for merely reporting on the chief minister’s health condition.”
