Kolkata Police suspended Abhijit Mondal, the officer-in-charge of Tala Police Station, on Wednesday, following his arrest by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in connection with the rape and murder of a doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, officials said.

Mondal’s suspension was carried out under West Bengal government service rules, which state that any government employee in custody for over 48 hours, whether due to preventive detention or criminal proceedings, is automatically suspended by the appointing authority.

Arrested on September 14, Mondal faces serious allegations of tampering with evidence and delaying the filing of the First Information Report (FIR). He remains in CBI custody.

“We visited Abhijit Mondal’s family and assured his wife that the police department will support them like a family,” V. Solomon Nesakumar, Additional Commissioner of Kolkata Police, told PTI.

Nesakumar expressed personal belief in Mondal’s innocence, stating, “I believe he is not guilty. He acted with good intentions, responded promptly to the crime scene, conducted a transparent investigation, and worked in the interest of justice.”

The case involves the rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor, who was attacked while on duty at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9, located within the jurisdiction of Tala police station in north Kolkata.
