The Congress party announced on Tuesday that A Revanth Reddy, the president of its state unit, will be the new Chief Minister of Telangana. The swearing-in ceremony will take place on December 7.

Addressing a press conference this evening, Congress general secretary (organisation) KC Venugopal said that party president Mallikarjun Kharge has decided to go with Revanth Reddy as the new CLP leader of the Telangana Legislative Party. “The Congress will deliver a clean and able government that will provide maximum governance,” he said.

The decision comes two days after the Congress emerged victorious in Telangana and dislodged the ruling Bharat Rashtra Samiti led by Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao from power in the state. The victory paved way for the formation of the first non-BRS government in Telangana since its formation in 2013.

Revanth Reddy, who led a spirited campaign by the Congress in the state, currently serves as the president of the Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee. In the elections held recently, Reddy won the Kodangal Assembly seat but lost from Kamareddy.

“The Honourable Congress President has decided to go with Revanth Reddy as the new CLP of Telangana Legislative Party. Revanth Reddy is working as the PCC president. He a dynamic leader who campaigned extensively with other senior leaders. We are very sure that the first and foremost priority of this government will be to fulfill the aspirations of the people of Telangana and the guarantees given to them,” Venugopal said announcing the decision.

The Congress party won the Telangana Elections 2023, winning 64 of the 119 Assembly seats in the state. The ruling BRS, which has never been out of power, finished a distant second with 39 seats while the BJP bagged 8 seats, AIMIM 7 and Others 1. The results to the elections were declared by the Election Commission of India on December 3.
