Renowned Kashmiri poet and broadcaster Farooq Nazki passed away on Tuesday at a hospital in Katra on Tuesday. He was 83.
According to media reports, he was battling several health issues, including lung and kidney complications over the past four years.
Nazki was awarded the Sahitya Akademi award in Kashmir for his poetry book ‘Naar Hyutun Kanzal Wanas’ (fire in the eyelashes).
He was also Director of Doordarshan and All India Radio, Srinagar from 1986-97. He retired from his job in 2000.
A writer par excellence, he also served as the editor of “Daily Mazdoor” in 1960, and served as the media advisors of two Chief Ministers – Farooq Abdullah and Omar Abdullah.
Following his demise, Chairman Democratic Progressive Azad Party (DPAP) and former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir Ghulam Nabi Azad offered his condolences.
In a post on X, the former Congress leader said, “Deeply saddened to learn about the demise of the living legend Farooq Nazki sahib. His literary brilliance & media presence were unparalleled. His contribution in the field of broadcasting and literature will have an everlasting impact on our cultural and literary treasure.”
