Lok Sabha Congress MP Ranjeet Ranjan, who is making headlines for her proposed private member bill to cap wedding expenses, had used a chartered plane in her own wedding. The expenditure had involved a chartered plane, and a ceremony involving a reception of a whopping 1 Lakh guests, News 18 reported. As per the report, the MP, along with her family, arrived from Jalandhar to Purnea in a chartered plane for her wedding, which took place in 1994. The report further said that the wedding arrangements were spread over 200 acres of land and even had hundreds of elephants and horses.
If the reports are true, Ranjeet’s big fat wedding contradicts the proposal she put forth in the parliament. Highly critical of pomp and show in Indian weddings, here’s what Ranjeet said while introducing the bill: “Great importance should be assigned to the solemnisation of marriage between two individuals. But unfortunately, these days a tendency of celebrating marriages with pomp and show and spending lavishly growing in the country. These days, marriages are more about showing off your wealth and as a result, poor families are under tremendous social pressure to spend more. This is needed to be checked as it is not good for society at large.”
What else is making news: “Will Not Let AIADMK Slip Into Hands Of Sasikala’s Family Members,” says O. Panneerselvam
Ranjeet further proposed her bill demanding a limit of Rs 5 lakhs be put on the expenditure to check the show of wealth. She further demanded that if an expenditure of more than Rs 5 lakh is made on a wedding, a 10 per cent contribution should be made towards marriages of girls from poor families.
