Congress appointed actor-turned-politician Raj Babbar the state party Chief in poll-bound Uttar Pradesh, amidst surmises about Priyanka Gandhi’s role in the state. The announcement of Babbar’s appointment was made by party leader Ghulam Nabi Azad during a press conference in Delhi.

The 64-year-old actor began his political career in 1989 after he joined the Janata Dal before joining the Samajwadi Party. He has remained part of the Lok Sabha thrice so far. Babbar was also a Rajya Sabha member from 1994 to 1999. He joined the Indian National Congress in 2006 and came to the prow in the famous by-elections of 2009 in UP, where he defeated Dimple Yadav, wife of current Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, and won a Lok Sabha seat.
