The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a series of weather alerts as two significant weather systems are set to impact different regions of the country. IMD has warned of heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in parts of Rajasthan, Gujarat, Goa, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra over the next two to three days. The Deep Depression over East Rajasthan is expected to persist in its west-southwestward movement, reaching Saurashtra & Kutch and the adjoining northeast Arabian Sea by August 29.
Additionally, a well marked low pressure area over Gangetic West Bengal is forecasted to advance west-northwestwards across East India. These weather developments are anticipated to bring very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall to South Rajasthan, Gujarat State, Konkan & Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, and Coastal Karnataka over the next two to three days, prompting widespread concerns about potential flooding.
IMD issues yellow alert for Delhi
The Met Office has issued a ‘yellow’ alert for Tuesday, forecasting mostly cloudy skies with light to moderate rain in the city. The alert also includes the possibility of thundershowers, gusty winds, and strong surface winds reaching speeds of 30 to 40 km/h. According to IMD, today’s maximum temperature will likely be around 33 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature is expected to be approximately 26 degrees Celsius.
Additionally, light rain swept through various areas of the national capital during the midnight celebration of Shri Krishna Janmashtami today. “Moderate rainfall accompanied with moderate thunderstorm and lightning (30-40 Km/h gusty winds) with possibility of one or two intense spells is very likely to occur at West Delhi, Central-Delhi, New Delhi, South-West Delhi, South Delhi, South-East Delhi, East Delhi, NCR (Gurugram, Faridabad, Manesar),” IMD posted on X.
Heavy rains lash Gujarat, schools closed
Due to the ongoing heavy rain across Gujarat, all primary schools in the state will remain closed tomorrow, Tuesday, as announced by State Education Minister Praful Pansheriya. IMD has forecasted heavy to extremely heavy rainfall for Gujarat over the next 2-3 days. The state has already experienced significant rainfall in the past two days, leading to widespread flooding and the displacement of hundreds of residents. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) is actively conducting relief and rescue operations in Valsad, where severe rains have resulted in flood-like conditions.
Light rains in parts of Himachal
The local Met office has issued a yellow alert for thunderstorms and lightning in isolated areas of the state for Tuesday and Wednesday. Kukumseri Keylong in the tribal Lahaul & Spiti district recorded the lowest night temperature in the state at 11.9°C, while Bilaspur reported the highest maximum temperature at 35.5°C. Currently, 41 roads across the state are closed due to the ongoing heavy rain. Mandi district has the highest number of closed roads with 14, followed by Kangra with nine, Shimla with eight, Kullu with six, and one each in Chamba, Kinnaur, Lahaul & Spiti, and Una districts.
