Eight people lost their lives and many others were injured on Friday when a private bus broke through a bridge and fell into a drain just a few feet below, police reported.
The bus, carrying over 45 passengers, plunged into the Lasara drain near Jeewan Singhwala village, officials said. The accident occurred as the bus was traveling from Talwandi Sabo to Bathinda.
Local residents quickly arrived at the scene to assist the victims, authorities noted. Police confirmed that eight people died in the crash.
Rescue operations were launched by the police and district administration, with the injured rushed to a nearby hospital. A National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team also arrived to support the rescue efforts.
Officials said the weather in the area was unfavorable, but the exact cause of the accident has not yet been determined.
Bathinda Deputy Commissioner Showkat Ahmad Parray oversaw the rescue operation and ensured medical teams and ambulances were dispatched to the site promptly.
