Two people were killed and 64 others received injuries when two Maharashtra State Transport (ST) buses collided with each other on the Pune-Solapur Highway in Maharashtra, as reported by police on Tuesday. The tragic incident took place at 5 pm on Monday near Varvand village of Pune district.
How did the accident happen?
According to police inspector Narayan Deskhmukh, a Maharashtra State Transport Corporation (MSRTC) bus which was heading towards Pune collided with another ST bus bound for Solapur. The unfortunate incident took place when a two-wheeler unexpectedly crossed in front of a bus that was going to Pune. The driver then tried to change the direction of the bus to avoid the two-wheeler but instead, it jumped on the divider and collided with the bus which was coming from another direction.
As per the latest report, the two buses were carrying more than 110 passengers and have caused major casualties and severe damage.
Passengers shifted to hospitals
A police officer has stated to the Indian Express that, based on a preliminary inquiry the driver tried to avoid the collision with the two-wheeler but it resulted in the bus crashing into the ongoing traffic. The police have also confirmed the on-the-spot deaths of the two passengers and 64 other passengers suffered injuries during the fatal incident. All the injured passengers were quickly shifted to nearby hospitals. To understand the cause of the incident in detail, a probe has been initiated and a case has also been registered. As per the information shared by the Yavat police station, emergency services were provided swiftly as more than ten ambulances helped in transferring 66 injured passengers to five nearby hospitals for immediate medical supervision.
