Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to take oath for a third consecutive term on Saturday, June 8. The swearing-in ceremony of the Union Cabinet is also likely to take place the same day.

PM Modi is poised to stake claim to form the government as his party won 240 seats and BJP-led NDA marched past the 272-majority mark by winning 293 seats.

If NDA forms the government is able to form the government for the third term, Modi will become the second leader to retain power for a third term after former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.

Earlier in the day, PM Modi chaired a meeting of the Union Cabinet to take stock of the Lok Sabha election results and also discussed matters related to the formation of the next government, according to sources. The Union Cabinet has recommended the dissolution of the 17th Lok Sabha, ANI reported.

PM Modi has reached Rashtrapati Bhavan to meet President Droupadi Murmu and resign from the top post. He would then stake claim to form the government.

Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party – which claimed 282 seats in 2014 and 303 in the 2019 election won 240 seats this time – 32 short of the 272-majority mark. It now relies on the 53 seats won by members of the party-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) to seal a third term.

PM Modi, who contested from Varanasi, after initially trailing managed to retain his Lok Sabha seat in Uttar Pradesh, defeating Congress’ Ajay Rai by less than 1.5 lakh votes to become a three-time MP from the temple town.
