Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday met President Droupadi Murmu and tendered his resignation along with Council of Ministers, the Rashtrapati Bhavan said.

President Murmu has accepted his resignation and requested him to continue till the new government assumes office, according to the statement.

Modi is likely to take oath for a third consecutive term on Saturday (June 8). This is the first time since Jawaharlal Nehru that a prime minister will be returning to power for a third consecutive term.

On June 4, when results for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections were declared, the BJP-led NDA comfortably exceeded the majority threshold of 272 in the 543-member Lok Sabha. The BJP secured 240 seats, falling short of the magic number for the first time since 2014.

Meanwhile, senior leaders of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) are slated to convene in the capital on Wednesday to deliberate on the details of the new government. This meeting comes on the heels of the ruling coalition securing a majority in the Lok Sabha elections, paving the way for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s commencement of a third term in office.

Among the anticipated attendees at the meeting are TDP president N. Chandrababu Naidu, JD(U) leader and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, Shiv Sena leader and Maharashtra CM Eknath Shinde, and LJP (Ram Vilas) leader Chirag Paswan. Modi and other senior BJP figures will be present.

With the TDP, JD(U), Shinde-led Shiv Sena, and LJP (Ram Vilas) securing 16, 12, seven, and five seats respectively, these parties are poised to play a pivotal role in the formation of the government.

Further, parties such as the TDP and JD(U) are expected to seek key portfolios, as their support will be essential for both the establishment and sustainability of the government.

Modi is poised for a third term at the helm, albeit with a government that may differ in composition and character, with a greater representation from the BJP’s allies.
