PM Narendra Modi SCO Summit 2025 Live Updates: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, speaking in the presence of Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif among others, at the SCO Summit’s plenary session said that India had faced the brutal reality of terrorism in Pahalgam. He stressed that India has also spoken strongly against the funding of terrorism, which remains a serious problem. Modi added that terrorism is a shared challenge for all of humanity and that we have to condemn terrorism in all its forms.”

PM Modi’s address at SCO Summit’s Plenary Session

The PM said that for any country to grow, security, peace, and stability are essential. But terrorism, separatism, and extremism remain serious obstacles on this path. He explained that terrorism is not just a threat to one nation’s security but a danger to all of humanity, and no country or citizen can feel completely safe from it.

He added that India has always called for unity in the global fight against terrorism. India had taken the lead in efforts against Al Qaeda and its allied groups through the Joint Information Operation. He also noted that India raised its voice strongly against the financing of terrorism and thanked other countries for their support in this fight.

The three leaders – PM Modi, Xi, and Putin arrived together at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Tianjin on Monday, where they were seen greeting each other warmly. Photos and videos from the event showed the three leaders shaking hands and sharing a light conversation, highlighting a friendly moment among the main figures of the group. PM Modi also took to X and shared the picture of hugging Putin with the caption, “Always delighted to meet President Putin.”

The visuals also showed Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif walking past them without joining in. Earlier, images from the summit had already shown a clear distance between Modi and Sharif — in the group photo, where they stood far apart, and later at the banquet, where they were seated with their backs turned to each other.

The Summit has gained additional importance due to the widening India-US rift and the barrage of tariffs introduced by US President Donald Trump. Modi also held a widely watched meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Sunday, heralding a cautious step towards improved India-China ties.

“The Prime Minister will be addressing the plenary session of the Summit tomorrow, where he will outline India’s approach to fostering regional cooperation under the SCO umbrella. After this engagement, he is scheduled to have a bilateral meeting with President Vladimir Putin of Russia, following which he will depart for India,” Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri confirmed during a briefing on Sunday evening.

Modi, Xi, and Putin at SCO Summit: BRICS under focus

The upcoming high-stakes meeting between the two leaders and Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit 2025 in Tianjin, carries big weight as the world is closely watching.

Smoother India-China relations are crucial for BRICS to work better, whether for showing unity on a global stage or pushing joint financial projects. With India set to host the 2026 BRICS summit, this thaw at the SCO summit, is especially important.

This meeting gives PM Modi, Xi, and Putin a chance to coordinate their response against Trump rising tariff pressure and sanctions, including reducing dependence on the US dollar. Proposals like boosting the BRICS New Development Bank, creating new payment systems, and expanding energy trade between Russia, India, and China are expected to be discussed. These steps would naturally make BRICS more economically resilient against US pressure.

With BRICS recently adding Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE, the grouping now has greater global weight. Discussions may also cover reforming institutions like the UN and IMF, an agenda that appeals to many developing nations looking for fairer representation.

Modi-Xi meeting

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping held a 40-minute bilateral meeting on Sunday morning ahead of the SCO Summit. Visuals shared online showed the two leaders shaking hands and exchanging greetings. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping, said India is committed to strengthening bilateral ties based on trust, respect, and sensitivity. He noted that both sides had agreed on better border management through their special representatives, which has helped maintain peace and stability after troop disengagement. Jinping, on the other hand, said, “It’s a great pleasure to meet you again, Mr Prime Minister. I welcome you to China for the SCO summit. Last year, we had a successful meeting in Kazan…”

Modi also announced that direct flights between India and China will soon resume, making travel easier between the two countries. Highlighting the importance of cooperation, he stressed that the welfare of nearly 2.8 billion people is closely connected to India-China relations.

PM Modi landed in China on Saturday for the SCO Summit, marking his first visit to the country in more than seven years, signalling India’s efforts to rebuild ties with China. The trip comes at a sensitive time as India is facing the heat of steep tariffs under US President Donald Trump, while memories of past border clashes with China still linger.

PM Modi China Visit Live Updates: Analysts say Modi, Xi seeking to align against…

PM Modi told Xi his country was committed to improving ties with China and discussed reducing India’s burgeoning bilateral trade deficit of nearly $99.2 billion. He also emphasised the need to maintain peace and stability at their disputed border after a clash in 2020 triggered a five-year military standoff.

Analysts say the two leaders are seeking to align against pressure from the West — days after US President Donald Trump imposed a punitive total of 50% tariff on Indian goods, partly in response to New Delhi’s purchase of Russian oil.

His moves had hurt decades of carefully cultivated US ties with New Delhi — which Washington had hoped would act as a regional counterweight to Beijing.
