PM Modi SCO Summit LIVE: PM Modi lands in Delhi after Japan, China visit

Chinese President Xi Jinping has pledged a grant of 2 billion yuan (around 281 million US dollars) to the member countries of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) this year, according to a report by China’s Xinhua News Agency.

Chinese President Xi Jinping said on Monday that China will work with all members of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) to strengthen the regional security group and take it to the next level.

Speaking at the opening of a two-day summit in Tianjin, Xi told more than 20 world leaders that the SCO sets an example of a new kind of international cooperation. He added that the forum firmly stands against outside interference, while also laying out his vision for a new global security order that challenges the influence of the United States.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will hold talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin today, right after the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Tianjin, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri informed on Sunday. He added that the Prime Minister will first take part in the main SCO session and then meet President Putin.

A senior Communist Party of China official has said that the Sunday meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping was fruitful. Cai Qi — a a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and close confidant of Xi — also said the two leaders reached a new important consensus on the development of bilateral relations.

State-run Xinhua news agency quoted Cai Qi as saying that China was willing to work with India to enhance friendly exchanges and mutually beneficial cooperation, properly manage and resolve differences, and promote the further improvement and development of China-India relations.

PM Modi told Xi his country was committed to improving ties with China and discussed reducing India’s burgeoning bilateral trade deficit of nearly $99.2 billion. He also emphasised the need to maintain peace and stability at their disputed border after a clash in 2020 triggered a five-year military standoff.

Analysts say the two leaders are seeking to align against pressure from the West — days after US President Donald Trump imposed a punitive total of 50% tariff on Indian goods, partly in response to New Delhi’s purchase of Russian oil.

His moves had hurt decades of carefully cultivated US ties with New Delhi — which Washington had hoped would act as a regional counterweight to Beijing.

Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri highlighted the many steps taken to normalise the situation along the India-China border in recent years. He said PM Narendra Modi and Xi Jinping had discussed a slew of issued during their talks on Sunday — including the “need to maintain peace on the borders”.

“The troops at the border, which are a reality, though I think that is again a situation that has started evolving over the course of the last year, as the situation at the borders has become more or is moving towards normalisation,” he said during a briefing on Sunday evening.

“…we should try being the two large neighbors that we are to each other, being two of the largest economies in the world, being the only two billion plus population countries in the world, that the future that we should aspire to, the future that we should aim at, the one that we should work towards, is one of partnership and not one of rivalry,” he added.

Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri reiterated on Sunday that there was no change in the Indian policy towards Taiwan.

India does not officially recognise the self-governed island but maintains some economic and commercial links with the region. Meanwhile, China insists that Taiwan is an inalienable part of the country that must eventually be reunified with the mainland — by force if necessary.

“There was recognition of the role that the Indian and the Chinese economies can play in stabilising world trade. Both leaders underlined the need, once again, to proceed from a political and strategic direction to reduce their bilateral trade deficit, facilitate bilateral trade and investment ties in both directions, and increase policy transparency and predictability,” said Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri.

Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri confirmed during a briefing on Sunday evening that there had been discussion about “regional and global issues and challenges” between Modi and Xi.

“Prime Minister expressed support for China’s ongoing presidency of the SCO and the summit in Tianjin. He also invited President Xi to the BRIC Summit that India will be hosting in 2026. President Xi thanked Prime Minister for the invitation and offered China’s full support to India’s BRICS presidency,” he added.

“Tomorrow, the Prime Minister will be addressing the plenary session of the Summit, where he will outline India’s approach to fostering regional cooperation under the SCO umbrella. After this engagement, he is scheduled to have a bilateral meeting with President Vladimir Putin of Russia, following which he will depart for India,” said Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri.

“President Xi made four suggestions to further upgrade bilateral relations, namely to strengthen strategic communication and deepen mutual trust, to expand exchanges and cooperation, to achieve mutual benefit and win-win results, to accommodate each other’s concerns, and finally to strengthen multilateral cooperation to safeguard common interests and all of these were responded to positively by Prime Minister Modi,” said Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri.

“Both leaders took note of the successful disengagement last year and the maintenance of peace and tranquillity in the border regions since then. In voicing certain principles related to this issue. The Prime Minister underlined the need for peace and tranquillity on the border areas for continued and smooth development of bilateral relations. There was understanding on the need to maintain peace on the borders using the existing mechanisms and avoid disturbances to the overall relationship going forward,” he said.

The MEA shared a briefing after the meeting between PM Modi and Xi Jinping on Sunday morning. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said it was understood during the discussion that it was “critical” for the two countries to cooperate “if there is to be an Asian century and a functioning multipolar world order with a multipolar Asia at its heart”.

“Both the leaders were happy to note the progress that had been registered, the actions that had been taken since the meeting in Kazan and the momentum that had been maintained in bilateral relations since that meeting, especially in the domain of people-to-people relations. They spoke about their respective understanding of principles for bilateral relations, which is expected will help guide the future work of the two sides as we work on other aspects of the relationship. They both agreed that the two countries were primarily focused on their domestic development goals, and in this, they were partners rather than rivals,” he added.

Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping discussed on Sunday recent contacts between Russia and the United States, Kremlin aide Yury Ushakov told Russian media without elaborating. Putin held talks in Alaska with US President Donald Trump earlier this month.

“China and India are two major ancient civilizations of the East, the two most populous countries in the world, and important members of the Global South. The two countries shoulder the crucial responsibility of improving the well-being of their two peoples, promoting the solidarity and rejuvenation of developing countries, and advancing the progress of human society. It should be the right choice for China and India to be good-neighbourly friends and partners that help each other succeed, and have the dragon and the elephant dance together,” wrote spokesperson of Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China Mao Ning on X.

“Very productive conversation with PM Phạm Minh Chính of Vietnam. India is very keen to further deepen ties with Vietnam in defence, trade, green energy and more,” he wrote on social media.

“Senior General Min Aung Hlaing and I held talks in Tianjin. Myanmar is a vital pillar of India’s Act East and Neighbourhood First Policies. We both agreed that there is immense scope to boost ties in areas like trade, connectivity, energy, rare earth mining and security,” Modi wrote on X while sharing photos from the interaction.
