Parliament highlights: The Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Amendment Act Bill was passed in Lok Sabha on Wednesday amid the Congress staging a walk out of the House over a key provisions in the law which aims to provide more teeth to anti-terror law in the country. The bill got 284 votes in favour and eight against it.
The discussion over UAPA Amendment Bill witnessed Home Minister Amit Shah hitting out at the Opposition for blocking the amendments.
“When you question us you don’t see who brought the law and amendments, who made it stringent. It was brought when you were in power, what you did then was right and what I’m doing now is also right,” Amit Shah said.
Amendments to UAPA will keep anti-terror agencies two steps ahead of terrorists. In the name of ideology, some people promote urban Maoism, the Home Minister added.
Earlier, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh made it clear that India has intention to invite any mediation over the Kashmir issue as the Opposition continued to create ruckus over US President Donald Trump’s recent remark,
“As S Jaishankar ji (External Affairs Minister) said Kashmir issue was not discussed in President Trump and PM Modi meeting. There is no question of mediation in Kashmir issue as it will be against the Shimla agreement,” Rajnath Singh said in Lok Sabha.

Questioning the Modi government's intentions, Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi said that the UAPA Amendment Bill is aimed at targeting Muslims and Dalits. The UAPA Bill aims at giving more teeth to National Investigation Agency (NIA) in dealing with terror cases.
