Prime Minister Narendra Modi has achieved an approval rating of 65 per cent among urban Indians, as of September 2023, as per the Ipsos IndiaBus Poll. As per the survey, PM Modi’s approval rating was 65 per cent, 18 per cent disapproved, 7 per cent neutral, and 9% were undecided about the leadership of the Prime Minister of India.

A zone-wise break-up of the survey showed PM Modi achieving higher rating in western India (80%), eastern India (73%), and northern India (72%), as compared to a weak 31 per cent in southern India.

The Prime Minister’s approval rating stood higher in tier 1 (76%), tier 2 (64%) and tier 3 (62%) cities vis-à-vis metros (58%). Interestingly, his approval rating was almost the same across socio-economic classifications (SECs) – SEC A (69%), SEC B (64%) and SEC C (63%).

More women approved of PM Modi with the approval rating across the two genders remaining high. While 65 per cent of the women approved of the Prime Minister’s handling of his job, his approval ratings stood at 64 per cent among men.
As per the survey, PM Modi’s approval rating remained steady across age groups – 66 per cent among 18-30 year olds, 64 per cent among 31-45 years and 64 per cent among those aged above 45.

Notably, the Prime Minister’s approval rating remained high among different cohorts, with only one exception. While 75 per cent of those unemployed approved of Modi as PM, his approval rating stood at 69 per cent among students, 67 per cent among the employed and 63 per cent among full time parents or homemakers. However, only 47 per cent of the self-employed approved of Modi’s handling of his job as PM, according to the survey.

Interestingly, those with higher education gave a higher approval rating of 70 per cent to the Prime Minister as compared to 61 per cent with lower education who approved of Modi as PM.

“PM Narendra Modi has achieved an approval rating of 65% on how Indians perceive his role as the prime minister of India. By and large across demographics Mr. Modi has received high approval ratings considering some respondents were undecided or were neutral. His disapproval in less than 2 in 10, while his approval is 2 in 3 of those polled. Only the residents of south zone and the self-employed seem disgruntled,» said Parijat Chakraborty, Group Service Line Leader, Public Affairs, Corporate Reputation, ESG and CSR at Ipsos IndiaBus.

The survey used a structured questionnaire among over 2,200 respondents from SEC A, B and C households, covering adults of both genders from all four zones in the country. The survey was conducted in metros, Tier 1, Tier 2 and Tier 3 towns, providing a more robust and representative view of urban Indians. The respondents were polled face-to-face and online. The data is weighted by demographics and city-class population to arrive at the national average, Ipsos India said.
