Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Sunday assured that the One Nation, One Election policy will be implemented within five years if the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is voted to power again.

The Defense Minister highlighted the simultaneous occurrence of Lok Sabha and assembly elections in Andhra Pradesh, emphasizing the government’s commitment to implementing ‘One Nation, One Election’ nationwide within the next five years, PTI reported.

Criticizing the YSRCP administration, Singh pointed out their alleged involvement in corrupt practices, attributing Andhra Pradesh’s staggering debt of Rs 13.5 lakh crore to their governance. He revealed that the BJP’s collaboration with TDP and Jana Sena in Andhra Pradesh aims to combat the perceived corruption under the Jagan Mohan Reddy government.

Expressing concern over the deteriorating law and order situation in the state, he urged citizens to support all NDA candidates contesting in the elections.

‘One Nation, One Election’ Policy

The policy recommended by a committee led by former President Ram Nath Kovind proposes to conduct state assembly elections and General elections or Lok Sabha Elections in the same year if not simultaneously.

Established in September last year, the committee submitted its report to President Droupadi Murmu, stating, “The committee unanimously recommends the conduct of simultaneous polls.” The report suggests that Lok Sabha and Assembly elections could coincide with local body elections, synchronizing the electoral process to just 100 days apart.

The ‘One Nation, One Election’ initiative was included in the BJP’s 2019 manifesto. However, it has faced significant opposition critique, with concerns raised by the opposition regarding its constitutional implications.
