A 52-year-old Odisha woman, who was presumed dead during a house fire, opened her eyes just moments before the pyre was to be ignited in Berhampur town in the southern district of Ganjam.

This incident happened at the woman’s place on Goods Shed Road. After being in MKCG Medical College and Hospital, she returned from the cremation ground late on Monday evening, as PTI reported.

The woman, who belongs to a family facing financial difficulties, got seriously burned in a home fire on February 1. She was initially in the same hospital but was later sent to another medical facility. Because of money problems, her husband brought her back home, and she’s been fighting for her life since then, according to the family.

Sibaram Palo, the woman’s husband, recounted the alarming situation on Monday, stating, “On Monday, she was not opening her eyes, and it appeared she was not breathing. We thought she might have died. We then informed others in the locality.”

Without getting a doctor’s opinion or a death certificate, Palo took what he thought was her body to a nearby cremation ground at Bijipur, using a hearse from the Berhampur Municipal Corporation.

“The funeral pyre was almost ready when she opened her eyes suddenly. We were initially shocked, but when we started calling her, she responded. It is a miracle,” shared Palo’s neighbor, K. Chiranjibi, who accompanied the family members to the cremation ground.

The local corporator was notified, and the same hearse was used to transport her back home. Subsequently, she was readmitted to the hospital.
