A fashion show held at the winter tourist destination of Gulmarg during the holy month of Ramadan has stirred widespread controversy in Kashmir, drawing sharp criticism from religious and political quarters.
Gulmarg's snowy slopes recently hosted a stunning fashion show, showcasing Kashmir's peaceful revival. But Islamist radicals & local politicians are up in arms, deeming it a 'national security threat'! Talk about misplaced priorities! Kashmir’s chief priest, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, strongly condemned the event, calling it “obscenity in the name of tourism promotion.” Expressing his anger on social media, the Mirwaiz wrote:
“Outrageous! That in the holy month of Ramzan an obscene fashion show is organised in #Gulmarg, pictures and videos from which have gone viral sparking shock and anger among people. How could it be tolerated in the Valley known for its Sufi, saint culture and the deeply religious outlook of its people?”
He demanded that those behind the event be held accountable, stating:
“Those involved should be immediately held accountable. Such obscenity in the name of tourism promotion will not be tolerated in #Kashmir!”

The Awami Ittehad Party (AIP) also lashed out at the UT administration over the show. In a statement, the party criticised Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who also holds the Tourism portfolio.
“How can the CM, who also heads the Tourism Department, allow such obscenity? Is there no concern for the sentiments of the people?” said AIP chief spokesperson Inam Un Nabi.
Social activist Raja Muzaffar Bhat described the show as an attack on the cultural and religious fabric of the region.
“Who allowed this nude fashion show at Gulmarg in Holy Ramzan? Semi nude men and women walking on snow. Will Tourism Deptt, CEO GDA throw some light? Why are you hell bound to demolish our moral, ethical, cultural and religious values (sic)?” he said in a post on X.
The event, intended as a promotional activity for tourism, has triggered a larger debate on cultural sensitivity and religious sentiments in the Valley.
The office of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah stated that the “shock and anger” were understandable and directed that a report be submitted within 24 hours, following which appropriate action would be taken.
