Following the resignation of Nitish Kumar as the Chief Minister of Bihar, the Congress on Sunday compared him to a “chameleon”, and said that the people of the state will “never forgive his betrayal”.

The party also said that the “political drama” has been staged to divert attention from the Rahul Gandhi-led Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra.

Congress general secretary, communications, Jairam Ramesh in a post on X, said in Hindi, “Nitish Kumar, who frequently changes political partners, is giving tough competition to the chameleons in changing colours.”

“People will never forgive this expert of betrayal. It is quite clear that the Prime Minister and the BJP are scared of the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra and this political drama has been created to divert attention from it,” he added.

Nitish Kumar on Sunday tendered his resignation to Governor Rajendra Arlekar, who accepted his resignation and asked him to continue as the caretaker CM till a new government is formed. He is expected to stake claim to form the government with the support of the BJP.

Speaking to reporters, outside the Raj Bhavan in Patna, Kumar said, “I have resigned as the CM and have asked the Governor to dissolve the present government.”

He submitted his resignation after chairing a meeting with party MLAs at his official residence.

Kumar’s decision to resign as the CM ahead of the Lok Sabha elections which is scheduled in April-May this year has dealt a huge blow to the Mahagathbandhan government in Bihar and the Opposition bloc INDIA, which is a grouping of 28 political parties to take on the BJP-led NDA in the 2024 general elections.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said that Lalu Prasad and Tejashwi Prasad had hinted over the exit of Nitish Kumar, and today it has come true.

“Aise desh mein bahut saare log hein, aaya ram gaya ram’,” he told reporters.

Meanwhile, BJP National General Secretary Vinod Tawde on Sunday said that in the legislative party meet, Bihar MLAs unanimously passed the proposal to form the NDA government in the state with BJP, JD(U) and other allies.

Samrat Chaudhary has been elected as the Leader of the legislative party, Vijay Sinha as the deputy leader.
