Nine people were killed and several others injured in a collision between a pick-up van and a canter truck in Ferozepur district, Punjab on Friday morning. The incident occurred around 8 am near a village in the Guruharsahai sub-division. The van, which was carrying over 20 people—mainly waiters en route to attend a wedding function in Jalalabad—was struck by the truck, resulting in fatalities and injuries.
At least nine individuals sustained injuries and are currently receiving treatment at various hospitals across the district. Authorities said that some of the critically injured have been transferred to Guru Gobind Singh Medical College in Faridkot, while others were admitted to the civil hospital in Jalalabad.
Ferozepur’s Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Saumya Mishra confirmed that teams from the “Sadak Suraksha Force” (SSF) quickly arrived at the scene to conduct a rescue operation. While some reports initially suggested that the accident could have been caused by low visibility due to fog, the police are still investigating the exact cause.
Deputy Commissioner (DC) Deepshikha Sharma confirmed that five ambulances were immediately dispatched to the site following the accident. The administration has promised to cover the medical expenses for the injured victims.
The tragic incident has prompted an outpouring of grief from political leaders across Punjab. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann expressed his sorrow on social media, offering prayers for the victims and a speedy recovery for the injured. “The Punjab government stands with the affected families during this difficult time,” he wrote in a post on X.
Shiromani Akali Dal leader Sukhbir Singh Badal also extended his condolences, saying, “Heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and prayers for a speedy recovery of the injured.” BJP leader and former Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh joined in, offering his sympathies and praying for the injured.
