The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has issued new directives to contractors to ensure strict adherence to safety standards and guidelines in the installation of Metal Beam Crash Barriers (MBCB) along national highways. The move is aimed at enhancing road safety and improving the quality of infrastructure on India’s highways.

In a statement on Wednesday, NHAI emphasized that contractors and concessionaires must ensure that the materials used for the crash barriers comply with the specifications outlined in crash test reports. The barriers should be installed following the methodology provided by the manufacturer to ensure optimal safety performance.

Additionally, the NHAI directed that contractors obtain a certificate from the manufacturer confirming that the installed crash barriers meet the prescribed design, standards, and specifications. The guidelines also call for ensuring the desired level of ground layer compaction at the installation site to ensure the structural integrity of the barriers.

The NHAI said that these measures will hold contractors more accountable for the quality of the projects and are expected to play a crucial role in enhancing the safety of national highway users. The authority added that the implementation of these guidelines would significantly contribute to reducing road accidents and improving overall road safety across the country.

This latest initiative by NHAI highlights the government’s continued focus on improving road infrastructure and ensuring the safety of millions of commuters who use national highways every day.
