At least 18 people lost their lives, and several others sustained injuries in a tragic stampede at New Delhi Railway Station on Saturday night. The chaos erupted due to overcrowding as thousands of devotees rushed to board trains to Prayagraj for the Maha Kumbh 2025 festival.
Compensation for victims
The Indian Railways has announced for the victims. Families of the deceased will receive Rs 10 lakh, while Rs 2.5 lakh will be given to those seriously injured. Minor injuries will be compensated with Rs 1 lakh.
Authorities have identified the 18 deceased, including elderly individuals and children. Some of the victims include Aaha Devi (79), Pinky Devi (41), Vyom (25), and Riya Singh (7), among others. The tragedy has left families devastated as they mourn their loved ones.
An eyewitness described the horrific scene, stating that the confusion started when an announcement was made about a last-minute platform change. “The train was originally supposed to arrive at platform 12 but was later shifted to platform 16. The crowd surged from both sides, and a stampede occurred,” he said.
