President Droupadi Murmu presided over the National Constitution Day ceremony on Wednesday, leading a commemorative event in the Central Hall of Samvidhan Sadan. The programme included the digital release of the Constitution of India in nine languages, namely Malayalam, Bodo, Kashmiri, Telugu, Nepali, Punjabi, Odia, Kashmiri, Assamese and Marathi.

The President on Wednesday stated that the Constitution serves as India’s moral compass, urging citizens to move away from a colonial mindset. While speaking at the Constitution Day ceremony, she said that India is showcasing a fresh development model to the world.

“Our constitution-makers ensured that our individual and democratic rights continue to be safeguarded. It is this Constitution that encourages us to shed colonial thinking and adopt a nationalistic outlook,” she stated.

The programme started at 11 am, with the gathering including the Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairman CP Radha Krishnan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Members of Parliament from both Houses and Union Ministers.

The President led the parliamentarians in affirming commitment to constitutional values and democratic traditions, as reported by IANS. The Ministry of Culture is slated to release a special Hindi commemorative booklet highlighting the art and calligraphy in the Indian Constitution. The ceremony also included a collective reading of the Preamble, headed by President Murmu.

The ministries, state governments, departments, and local bodies across the country will host programmes based on constitutional awareness. Citizens will also be participating through online reading of the Preamble on MyGov.in and Constitution75.com. Meanwhile, national quizzes, cultural events, seminars, poster-making activities, essay competitions and exhibitions will also be held honouring the Constitution.

National-level events planned from the Panchayat to the Parliament

These activities will be conducted on every level, from Panchayats to Parliament. The goal of the government is to turn Constitution Day 2025 into a “national festival of constitutional values.

PM Modi on Constitution Day 2025

The Prime Minister Narendra Modi appealed to the citizens to uphold their Constitutional duties, calling them the “foundation of a strong democracy”. In a letter addressed to the public, he encouraged educational institutions to celebrate the day by recognising the first-time voters turning 18.

PM Modi also referred to Mahatma Gandhi’s principle that rights emerge from the performance of duties. He also emphasised that societal and economic progress is built on this mindset. He also posted on X that the Constitution places the highest significance on dignity, equality and labour while reminding citizens of their responsibilities. PM Modi also paid tribute to the framers of the Constitution, stating their foresight continues to guide India’s journey towards a Viksit Bharat.

As per a report by ANI, the Prime Minister is also scheduled to join the Constitution Day celebration in the Central Hall at 11 am. This year marks the 76th anniversary of the adoption of the Constitution. The commemorative booklet “Art and Calligraphy in the Indian Constitution” will be officially released at the event.
