A Mumbai auto-rickshaw driver has been arrested for the alleged rape of a 20-year-old woman who was found late Tuesday at a railway station with stones and a surgical blade wrapped in plastic inserted into her vagina. The accused has been charged with rape, but preliminary police inquiries suggest that the situation might be more complex than it initially appeared.
Details of the Incident
According to police sources, the young woman, who resides with her family in Nalasopara, inserted the objects into her body to avoid being scolded and beaten by her parents for being raped by the auto-rickshaw driver.
Reportedly, the woman and the accused went to Arnala Beach, about 12 km from her home, with plans to stay overnight. However, due to a lack of valid identification, they were unable to secure a hotel room and ended up spending the night on the beach, where the alleged rape took place. The driver then fled the scene, leaving the woman to return home alone.
Panicking at the thought of facing her parents and acknowledging the assault, the woman reportedly bought a surgical knife and inserted it into her vagina, along with stones. Experiencing severe pain and bleeding, she reached out to local police, who took her into custody and filed a rape case against the accused auto-rickshaw driver.
Initially, the woman claimed she was an orphan from Varanasi living under the care of her uncle, and that they had traveled to Mumbai on Sunday. However, her father later informed the police of two prior rape complaints filed by his daughter in 2023 at Mumbai’s Nirmal Nagar and Shivaji Nagar police stations.
The police suspect the woman may have underlying mental health issues, which could have contributed to her actions and statements. Authorities are currently conducting further investigations to understand the full scope of the case and determine the veracity of her claims.
