Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Saturday took a sharp swipe at the Centre over the ongoing India–US trade talks, claiming that Prime Minister Narendra Modi would “meekly bow” to a tariff deadline allegedly set by US President Donald Trump.
His remarks came a day after Union Minister Piyush Goyal asserted that India does not make trade deals under pressure or within imposed timelines. Citing a media report, Gandhi posted on X (formerly Twitter): “Piyush Goyal can beat his chest all he wants, mark my words, Modi will meekly bow to the Trump tariff deadline.”
Goyal says India will not rush into a trade deal
Speaking at the 16th Toy Biz B2B Expo in Delhi, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal reiterated that India’s stance in international trade negotiations is guided solely by national interest.
“India never enters into trade deals based on deadlines or time pressure. A deal is accepted only when it is fully matured, well-negotiated, and in the national interest,” he stated, as quoted by ANI.
He added that India is currently engaged in trade discussions with several nations, including the United States, New Zealand, the European Union, Chile, and Oman. “These discussions will only lead to agreements if they are mutually beneficial and safeguard India’s interests,” Goyal said.
Government eyes boost for toy sector
Goyal also highlighted the growing potential of India’s toy industry, describing it as a “rising sector with global aspirations.” He noted that Indian-made toys are already being exported to 153 countries, with further expansion into Middle Eastern markets on the horizon.
He announced that the government is preparing an incentive scheme to support domestic manufacturers. “We will soon be launching a support programme and incentive scheme for the toy industry,” he said, pointing to India’s vast consumer base of 1.4 billion as a key opportunity.
