Mizoram Elections 2023: Mizoram Assembly Speaker and Mizo National Front (MNF) leader Lalrinliana Sailo resigned as a legislator on Wednesday. Sailo, who won the Chalfilh seat in the 2018 assembly polls, said that he will be joining the BJP for “development” of the state, reports PTI.
He submitted his resignation to Deputy Assembly Speaker H Lalbiakzauva.
Sailo was denied a ticket by the ruling party for the upcoming November 7 Assembly elections, which will be held in a single phase. The counting of votes for the 40-member Mizoram Assembly will be on December 3, the Election Commission of India announced on Monday.
Speaking to reporters, Sailo said, “The financial condition of Mizoram is not in a good shape… I will join the party to usher in development in my state,”.
Over the past eight days, seven legislators have put in their papers, including former minister K Beichhua.
Congress MLA K T Rokhaw has joined the ruling Mizo National Front and will contest from Palak, while Beichhua, who was expelled by the MNF in January, will contest from Siaha, his home turf, on a BJP ticket.
Five Independent MLAs backed by Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) have also submitted their resignation.
