Operation Sindoor: In the wake of heightened tensions between India and Pakistan, the Centre has upgraded the security detail of External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar. This move comes days after a “specific request” was made by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), citing elevated risks following the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, reports Indian Express.
According to reports, the Delhi Police began the process of enhancing Jaishankar’s security over the weekend, following cross-border hostilities that have raised concerns for top-level officials handling foreign policy.
Bulletproof vehicles added to Jaishankar’s convoy
In a significant step, two bullet-resistant escort vehicles have been allocated to the EAM’s security convoy. These additions are aimed at bolstering protection during public and official movements. A senior official confirmed that the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF)—which currently handles Jaishankar’s Z-category security—finalised the decision after conducting a detailed threat assessment.
“Jaishankar already had six CRPF personnel for mobile security and ten for residence security under Z-category cover. The addition of bulletproof cars and an escort detail elevates this further,” the officer said.
Security protocols being re-evaluated
Currently, Home Ministry guidelines for VIP and VVIP security do not formally provide for escort cars or specific call signs. However, following MEA’s request, the matter was forwarded to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) for review. This reflects the growing concerns within the establishment about potential threats faced by high-ranking diplomatic officials, especially amid geopolitical instability.
Sources say the MHA is now considering policy-level changes to accommodate new security protocols in exceptional cases where threat perceptions are unusually high.
India-Pakistan conflict
The recent flare-up in India-Pakistan tensions, following India’s Operation Sindoor—a military response to the Pahalgam attack—has intensified security concerns for key government figures. With Jaishankar playing a central role in shaping India’s diplomatic strategy and responses, the MEA reportedly flagged a need for enhanced protective measures.
The decision to elevate his security marks a departure from the usual protocol and underlines the sensitive nature of the current situation.
