The Congress on Saturday announced its decision to extend support to AAP candidates in the upcoming MCD mayoral polls scheduled for April 26. AAP has nominated Mahesh Khichi for the mayor’s position and Ravinder Bhardwaj for deputy mayor in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) elections.
Anil Bhardwaj, former MLA and chairman of the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee’s communications department, said that senior leaders convened a meeting wherein it was agreed upon that the party would back AAP candidates in the polls. The motive behind this decision, he said, was to ensure the smooth functioning of Delhi’s governance and to alleviate any inconvenience faced by the residents.
Notably, AAP and the Congress are engaged in an alliance for the Lok Sabha elections in Delhi.
Meanwhile, the MCD, on Friday, submitted a request to the Election Commission for permission to conduct the mayoral polls. Additionally, they urged Lt Governor VK Saxena to appoint a presiding officer for the process, as specified by a civic body official. This formal request is necessitated by the prevailing Model Code of Conduct enforced due to the ongoing Lok Sabha elections.
In contrast, the opposition BJP has nominated Kishan Lal for the mayor’s post and Neeta Bisht for deputy mayor in the upcoming elections.
