A massive fire broke out late on Monday night in a building in Delhi’s Sanjay Gandhi Transport Nagar while people were celebrating Diwali. At least forty fire tenders rushed to the spot. The fire has not yet been completely extinguished. Reports said seven people were rescued time from the fire by the firefighting team. The fire, as per reports, began due to firecrakers, the Delhi Fire Services (DFS) officials said.

A call regarding fire breaking out in two godowns, spanning about 1000 square metres, was received at 1.25 am, an official said, adding that the fire-fighting operation is going on.

“The godowns have a basement, ground floor and first floor. We rushed 40 fire tenders to the spot. The godowns had automobile repairing tools stored,” the official added.

Fire officials received over 250 calls

Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Fire Officer AK Malik said that on Diwali, they received 269 calls, which is less than last year’s 318 calls.

“Our team responded swiftly, ensuring that no minor incidents escalated into major ones and no citizens were injured. A major incident in the Janakpuri area resulted in the rescue of seven people. Two firefighters sustained minor injuries in a major incident in Rupnagar, but their injuries are not serious… Before Diwali we appealed to the people to be cautious while celebrating, which seems to have been heeded by the public,” he said.
