A 70-year-old man was killed and five others were injured when a rocket struck the residence of late Mairembam Koireng Singh, Manipur’s first Chief Minister, in Bishnupur district on Friday afternoon. The tragic incident occurred at around 3:30 pm, leaving the local community in shock.

Eyewitnesses described the object as a missile-like device with a smoke trail, which appeared to have been launched from beyond the hills of the Sendra Road area in Bishnupur district’s Moirang town. The district, part of the Meitei-majority Imphal Valley, lies close to the Kuki-Zo-dominated Churachandpur district, where conflict has been brewing between the two communities since May 3, 2023, according to the media reports.

The deceased, identified as RK Rabei from Moirang Pheewangbam Leikai, was among a group of people preparing for a religious event when the rocket exploded. The injured were quickly evacuated to a hospital, and the area has since been cordoned off by authorities.
