A compliant have filed a case against a man and seven of his family members for allegedly issuing triple talaq to his wife after she praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for Ayodhya’s development.

In her complaint to police in Bahraich, where her parents reside, Maryam accused her husband of physically assaulting her and throwing hot dal at her. She also alleged that on the day he pronounced instant triple talaq, his family members attempted to strangle her.

“I am a resident of Mohalla Sarai, Thana Jarwal Road in Bahraich. On December 13, 2023, I was married to Arshad, son of Islam, a resident of Mohalla Delhi Darwaza of Kotwali Nagar, Ayodhya. My father got me married with the consent of both the parties and by spending more than his means,” The woman is heard saying in a video clip that has surfaced online, as PTI reported.

“After the marriage, when I went out in the city, I liked the roads of Ayodhya Dham, the beautification, the development and the atmosphere there. On this, I praised Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Prime Minister Narendra Modi in front of my husband,” she said in the video.

Following this incident, Maryam’s husband, Arshad, became enraged and sent her to her maternal home in Bahraich. After intervention from some relatives, she returned to Ayodhya to live with him, according to Jarwal Road Police Station Incharge Inspector (SHO) Brijraj Prasad.

However, Arshad then abused both the chief minister and the prime minister, and pronounced triple talaq by saying “talaq, talaq, talaq,” the SHO said.

Maryam also alleged that her mother-in-law, younger sister-in-law, and brothers-in-law attempted to strangle her. On the day he issued the triple talaq, Arshad physically assaulted her as well.

Based on her complaint, police have booked eight people, including Arshad, his mother Raisha, father Islam, sister-in-law Kulsum, brothers-in-law Faran and Shafaq, and sister-in-law Simran.

A case has been registered under charges of assault, abuse, threat, and violations of the Dowry Prohibition Act and the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act, the police added.
