A case has been registered against renowned Malayalam film director Ranjith Balakrishnan following a complaint from a 31-year-old man who alleged sexual assault. According to police reports, the complaint was lodged at a police station in Bengaluru, where the alleged incident took place in December 2012 at a five-star hotel near Kempegowda International Airport.
The complainant claims he first met Balakrishnan in 2012 in Kozhikode while visiting actor Mammootty during the shooting of the film Bavuttiyude Namathil, which was written and produced by the director. After their initial meeting, Balakrishnan reportedly obtained the complainant’s phone number and invited him to the hotel in Bengaluru. During this visit, the complainant alleges that Balakrishnan offered him alcohol and subsequently sexually assaulted him.
Initially, the complaint was filed in Kerala, but it was transferred to Bengaluru since the alleged crime occurred in the city. In light of recent sexual harassment allegations that have emerged from the Malayalam film industry, the complainant stated that he felt empowered to come forward with his story now. He indicated that the courage displayed by other victims motivated him to seek justice after several years of silence.
On October 26, a First Information Report (FIR) was officially registered at the Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) police station. The FIR charges Balakrishnan under Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code, which addresses unnatural offences, and Section 66E of the Information Technology Act, pertaining to the violation of privacy.
Authorities are now investigating the allegations against Balakrishnan, who has made a name for himself in the Indian film industry with acclaimed works. The news has shocked fans and industry insiders alike, raising questions about safety and accountability in the entertainment sector.
As the investigation unfolds, it is essential to acknowledge the bravery of individuals coming forward with such allegations. The incident highlights the importance of creating a safe environment for everyone in the industry, free from harassment and abuse. The ongoing case against Balakrishnan is likely to draw significant attention and may prompt further discussions about the culture within the Malayalam film community and the treatment of artists.
