Maharashtra local body elections 2025: Leaders in fray

Leaders of the ruling Mahayuti alliance, including Devendra Fadnavis, Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar, campaigned actively across the state. On the Opposition side, the Congress was the only party seen campaigning on a large scale.

Within the Mahayuti alliance, the BJP and Shiv Sena have fielded candidates against each other in several districts such as Sindhudurg, Satara, Dharashiv, Palghar and Thane. Meanwhile, the two rival NCP factions led by Ajit Pawar and Sharad Pawar have joined hands in Kolhapur.

In the Vidarbha region, considered a stronghold of Devendra Fadnavis, the main contest is between the BJP and the Congress. The BJP is contesting all 27 cities in the region, while the Congress is contesting 22, leading to direct fights in 18 cities.

These elections are the first major municipal polls after the 2024 Maharashtra Assembly elections and are being seen as an important test for the ruling alliance. Of the total seats, 3,492 are reserved for women, 895 for Scheduled Castes, 338 for Scheduled Tribes and 1,821 for OBCs. To boost voter participation, the state government has declared a paid holiday today. The model code of conduct has been in place since November 4.
