The Lucknow police arrested two youths, both in their early 20s, after a senior police officer’s 10-year-old son died after being run over by a speeding SUV while he was practising skating near the Janeshwar Mishra Park at Gomtinagar extension in the city.

Namish Srivastava, a student of class III, suffered grievous injuries that led to his death, police said, PTI reported. He was the son of Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Shweta Srivastava, posted at police headquarters in Lucknow. Namish was the only child of Shweta and her husband, Abhinav Srivastava.

The incident took place at around 5.30 am in Gomti Nagar extension area after which the child was taken to a hospital where he was declared dead.

The police traced the accused with the help of CCTV footage.

Officers identified the arrested persons s 22-year-old Dev Shri Verma, a B.Tech student, and his friend Sarthak Singh (21), who is pursuing a law degree, said Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police, Lucknow, Syed Ali Abbas.

The police have also seized the SUV involved in the incident.

The two accused have been booked under IPC section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and 279 (rash driving or riding on a public way).
