The death toll from the building collapse in Transport Nagar rose to eight after rescuers pulled three more bodies from the debris, officials said on Sunday.

The three-storey building, which housed godowns and a motor workshop, collapsed on Saturday evening, injuring 28 people.

The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) recovered the bodies of Raj Kishore, 27, Rudra Yadav, 24, and Jagrup Singh, 35, during the ongoing rescue operation, Relief Commissioner G.S. Naveen said.

The rescue efforts are continuing, and authorities are investigating the cause of the collapse.

A senior official from the district administration stated that their current priority is to ensure that no one remains trapped under the debris.

Police said that the building, which was constructed around four years ago, had ongoing construction work at the time of the incident. Most of the victims were on the ground floor when the collapse happened at around 4.45 pm on Saturday.

The injured have been taken to several hospitals in the district, including Lok Bandhu Hospital.

Officials said the ground floor of the building housed a motor workshop and warehouse, while the first floor had a medical godown and the second floor was used for a cutlery warehouse.

Akash Singh, who worked in the medical godown and was among those injured, recalled that a pillar in the building had developed a crack. “We had come down to the ground floor because it was raining. We noticed that a pillar of the building had developed a crack. Suddenly, the entire building collapsed on us,” he said.
