Lok Sabha elections 2024: Key Candidates and constituencies
Jyotiraditya Scindia (Guna)
In a strategic move, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has opted to replace its current MP for the Guna Lok Sabha seat with Jyotiraditya Scindia, a seasoned politician with a rich family legacy. Notably, Scindia faced defeat in 2019 under the Congress banner against BJP’s Krishna Pal Singh Yadav. This time, Scindia will take on former BJP stalwart Rao Yadavendra Singh Yadav, who joined Congress in 2023, in the electoral arena. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Jyotiraditya Scindia contested from the Guna constituency in Madhya Pradesh. He lost the election to his opponent, Krishna Pal Singh of the BJP. Krishna Pal Singh won the seat by a margin of 1,25,549 votes.
Pallavi Dempo (South Goa)
Pallavi Dempo, an industrialist and a member of one of Goa’s prominent business families, is contesting from the BJP ticket in the South Goa constituency. With assets exceeding Rs 1,361 crore, she emerges as the wealthiest candidate in the third phase. Notably, she holds the distinction of being the first woman fielded by the BJP from Goa in a Lok Sabha election. Dempo’s educational background includes a bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from Parvatibai Chowgule College, Goa, and a master’s degree in business management (MBA) from MIT, Pune. In the 2019 general elections, the South Goa constituency was won by Francisco Sardinha of the Indian National Congress (INC). He secured victory with a margin of 9,755 votes, defeating Narendra Keshav Sawaikar of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), who was the incumbent MP at that time.
Pralhad Joshi (Dharwad)
Pralhad Joshi, who’s been the MP from Dharwad three times already, is running again for the seat on a BJP ticket, marking his fourth consecutive bid for a seat in the lower house of the Parliament. Joshi faces Vinod Asooti, a newcomer to Lok Sabha elections and relatively inexperienced in mainstream politics. Joshi’s electoral success has been notable: he won by over one lakh votes in both 2009 and 2014 and expanded his victory margin to over two lakhs in 2019. Additionally, Joshi serves as the Union Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Coal, and Mines of India, a position he has held since May 30, 2019.
Dimple Yadav (Mainpuri)
Wife of former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, Dimple Yadav is the incumbent member of Parliament from Mainpuri, which is a stronghold of the Samajwadi Party (SP). However, the Mainpuri seat is set to witness a close electoral fight in the Lok Sabha elections 2024 as the ruling BJP looks to breach the SP stronghold, pitting Thakur Jaivir Singh against sitting MP Dimple Yadav. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the Mainpuri parliamentary constituency in Uttar Pradesh was won by Mulayam Singh Yadav of the Samajwadi Party (SP). He won by a margin of 94,389 votes, defeating Prem Singh Shakya of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), who was the runner-up.
Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury (Baharampur)
Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury has been representing the Congress party from Baharampur for three terms, starting from 2009 to 2019. He managed to break the long-standing hold of the Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP) in Baharampur. Looking back at the past three Lok Sabha elections, Adhir Ranjan won the seat with big margins. In 2019, he defeated Apurba Sarkar (David) of the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) by 80,696 votes. In 2014, he beat Indranil Sen of the AITC by a whopping 156,567 votes. And in 2009, he won against Pramothes Mukherjee of the Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP). This time, he faces Nirmal Saha, the newly announced BJP candidate, and former Indian cricketer Yusuf Pathan from TMC.
Badruddin Ajmal (Dhubri)
The All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) president, Badruddin Ajmal, has been representing the Dhubri Lok Sabha seat since the 2009 general elections, holding a strong position for the AIUDF party. He first won with a big margin in 2009, securing 76.31 per cent of the vote share and over 1.84 lakh votes. In 2014, Ajmal won again with even more support, getting over 5.92 lakh votes and a vote share of 43.26 percent. In 2019, he secured the seat for the third time with over 7.18 lakh votes and a vote share of 42.66 per cent. Ajmal’s popularity in the constituency is due to various infrastructure projects he initiated, like building the Dhubri Phulbari Bridge, establishing Rupsi Airport, and setting up Dhubri Medical College. His passionate speeches about his contributions to the area also contribute to his popularity.
Shivraj Singh Chouhan (Vidisha)
The former Madhya Pradesh chief minister, who served for 20 years, has been fielded from Vidisha. After not being given the CM post, Chouhan is returning to his home turf in Vidisha after almost 20 years. He has been portrayed as someone who sacrificed the CM post despite leading his party to a massive victory. Apart from the BJP, Shivraj Singh Chouhan also had a strong grip over the constituency because he won the election for the first time in 1991 and maintained his victory till 2004. Chouhan is one of the key faces to drive the polls in BJP’s favour. In the 2019 elections, the seat was won by Ramakant Bhargava of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He secured victory with a margin of 5,47,754 votes, defeating Shailendra Rameshchandra Patel of the Indian National Congress (INC), who was the runner-up.
Digvijaya Singh (Rajgarh)
Former chief minister of Madhya Pradesh and senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh is contesting from Rajgarh, making his return to the seat after three decades. Singh is facing two-time Rajgarh MP Rodmal Nagar. Historically, the Congress has won 9 elections from this seat, while the Jansangh-BJP has won it 6 times, and the Janata Party twice. Additionally, an independent candidate won the seat once. After Digvijay Singh relinquished the seat in 1994, his younger brother Laxman Singh held the seat until 2009. Although Laxman Singh was elected MP on a BJP ticket between 2004 and 2009, the Rajgarh seat was recaptured by Congress’ Narayan Singh Ambale in 2009. However, the BJP regained the seat from the Congress in 2014, with Rodmal Nagar winning consecutively in 2019 as well.
Supriya Sule (Baramati)
Supriya Sule, the daughter of Sharad Pawar, the chief of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), is gearing up for a political showdown in the Baramati constituency. She will be facing her sister-in-law, Sunetra Pawar, who is the wife of Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar. This Pawar vs Pawar showdown comes amid a vertical split in the party, with Supriya now contesting under a new symbol after losing control of the NCP’s clock emblem in a recent factional dispute engineered by her cousin Ajit.
Since 2009, Sule has been winning Lok Sabha elections from her family’s stronghold, using the clock symbol of the Nationalist Congress Party, founded by her father, Sharad Pawar, in 1999. However, last year, the faction led by Sharad Pawar lost control of the party symbol. In the 2019 elections, Sule secured victory in the Baramati constituency with a significant margin, defeating Kanchan Rahul Kool of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) by 1,65,911 votes.
